Events on your building screens

Publishing an event now puts it on your lobby and elevator screens, next to your building news. Until this release that had never happened, for any building, since screens shipped.

What you need to do

Nothing, as long as your building has screens turned on. Publish an event the way you always have and it appears in the screen rotation.

The one requirement is that Displays is enabled for the property. If it is off, events do not appear, and neither does news. You can check this in Property Settings.

Which events appear

Events that are published and have not finished yet. A draft does not appear. A private or group-restricted event follows the same visibility rules on screen as it does everywhere else.

When they disappear

An event clears itself about two hours after it ends. The grace period is deliberate: an event that ends at 8pm stays up while people are still leaving, rather than vanishing at the exact minute it finishes.

You do not need to take an event down manually. If you edit an event after publishing it, the screen entry updates in place rather than being replaced, so anything printed that points at it keeps working.

Backfill

Every already-published event that has not yet happened was placed on the screens when this release went out. You do not need to republish anything to catch up.

Why this had never worked

The step that copies an event to the screens checked whether the building had screens enabled, and that check was silently answering "no" for every building, every time. The failure was then thrown away rather than reported, so nothing surfaced anywhere for five months. News had the same fault fixed a while ago; events were missed at the time.

Failures now write a durable record instead of being discarded, so a future problem of this kind surfaces rather than sitting invisible.
