The fiscal year setting tells URBI which calendar month your financial year begins. It controls how fiscal periods are generated, how budgets are structured, and how the year-end close runs.
Before you begin
- You must have the accounting_settings_manage permission for the property.
- Configure the fiscal year before you create a budget or post journal entries. Once either of those actions exists for a property, the start month locks permanently and cannot be changed.
Steps: Set the fiscal year start month
- Go to Property Settings and click the Accounting tab.
- On the Accounting Settings card, click Manage.
- The Accounting Settings drawer opens. In the left tab rail, click Fiscal Year (it is selected by default when you first open the drawer).
- Read the warning banner at the top of the panel: "Fiscal year start month locks permanently." This is your reminder to set the correct month now.
- Use the Fiscal year start month dropdown to select the month your fiscal year begins (for example, April for a April-to-March year, or July for a July-to-June year). The field is pre-filled to January.
- A read-only line below the dropdown confirms the resulting period range, for example: "FY2026 - Jan 2026 to Dec 2026, 12 monthly periods." Verify this looks correct.
- Click Save changes.
What happens after you save
URBI generates the 12 monthly fiscal periods for the property from the chosen start month. The Accounting Settings card on the Accounting tab will now show the configured range (for example, "Apr-Mar") instead of "Not set."
The lock: what it means and when it triggers
The fiscal year start month locks the moment the property has either:
- an existing budget, or
- a posted journal entry.
When locked, the start month dropdown is disabled and a blue info banner explains the reason, for example: "This property has an active budget (Budget FY2026) and posted journal entries. The fiscal year start month is now permanent." The Save button is also disabled on the Fiscal Year tab.
The lock is enforced at the database level, not only in the UI. If you need to change a locked fiscal year, contact URBI support.
Applying the same settings to other properties
After saving, you can copy the same fiscal year start month (and reporting settings) to other properties you manage.
- On the Fiscal Year tab, find the Apply to other properties section below the period preview line.
- Click the button to expand the property list.
- The list shows all properties where you hold the accounting_settings_manage permission and accounting is enabled. Properties that do not meet those conditions are shown greyed with a reason (for example, "Accounting not enabled") so you can see why they are excluded.
- Select the properties you want to update, then click Apply.
- After the run completes, a result view replaces the picker. Each property shows one of three outcomes:
- Applied: all settings were written successfully.
- Fiscal year skipped: the fiscal year start month is locked on that property, but all other settings (reporting basis, rollover, closing equity account, auto-lock) were still applied.
- Failed: the update did not complete (for example, if a permission was revoked mid-run). The reason is shown in the row.
The run never silently succeeds for a failed property. If any row shows Failed, re-check your permissions for that property and try again.
