Renewing extends the lease term. It does not move money.
Before extending, the screen lists the deposit exactly as it stands today: the amount owed, the amount received, the amount held, the due date for anything unpaid, where the deposit is in its lifecycle, and its accounting entries. Every one of these is marked Unchanged, because extending the lease changes none of them.
The one deposit field a renewal does move is the tracking expiry date, which follows the new lease end so the deposit stays associated with the live term. This matters more than it used to: a deposit that reaches its expiry date is marked expired and sends a notice, so moving the date forward on a renewal keeps that notice from arriving while the term is still live.
The date you typed and the acknowledgement are kept on screen, so a temporary failure does not cost you your entry. Fix the problem and select Extend again.
